2008-2009 College Football - What I Saw in the Dec 2008 thru Jan 2, 2008 Bowl Games

Cotton Bowl

What an impressive win for Ole Miss over Texas Tech. The Rebels finished the season with a flurry, winning their last 6 games. I think they pretty much served notice to the rest of the SEC that they are going to be formidable next season.

Texas Tech clearly was struggling to deal with the loss to Okie and missing out on a National Championship. I see it as a coaching issue--Mizzou had the same thing happen to them last season and ended up at the Cotton Bowl, but Gary Pinkel said nothing but positive things about going to that bowl game. The result was much different-- the Tigers took care of business against Arkansas. Ironically, the coach of Arkansas at that game is now the current coach of Ole Miss-- Houston Nutt. I do admit, however that Ole Miss is better team than Arkansas was last year, although the resume was similar.

Sugar Bowl:

Utah vs Alabama game at the Sugar Bowl---wow! Utah ended up being a perfect 13-0 this season, and beating Bama was some kind of an impressive win. I would absolutely LOVE a matchup where they would play Florida or Oklahoma, but sadly the powers that be in college football will deny us again of a legit champion. Todd Blackledge offered another scenario during the CapOne Bowl, in which "bowl champions"  would be placed in a pool to determine the two best teams to play a final game to determine a champion. His system would require another bowl game to be designated a BCS bowl, and all of the bowl games would need to be played on Jan 1 so that the final game could be played the following weekend. I'm not sure how that would improve the current system, but at least it would make all of the bowl games more relevant. Unfortunately, in my opinion, it would just cause more agony for teams who win but are still left out of a shot at the title. i think our scenarios with rounds of playoffs in a tournament makes for a better solution.

Rose Bowl

Pac-10 is 5-0 in the bowls, but even more fun was hearing Brent Musberger sticking it into the East Coast media's face by saying during the Rose Bowl telecast that they were wrong to think that the Pac-10 was weak, and that USC has the best D in the nation. I'm no fan of USC, except when they are playing in the Rose Bowl or going against any SEC opponent!

"Miscellaneous" Bowls:

One of my buddies that I talk fooball with and I were definitely down on Notre Dame and how pretty average to horrible they have been for at least 10 years. Well, all that trash talk we did about Notre Dame--their ears must have been burning! They took it to Hawaii yesterday! I don't think Hawaii is as good as they were last year; I still think Notre Dame is overrated...
